Water Conditions at Sisal Reef
Visibility: 5-12 meters (varies by season and current — best November-April). Water temperature: 24-28°C year-round. Depth at snorkel zones: 2-6 meters. Current: mild to moderate — guides assess conditions before each departure. The water is greener and less clear than the Caribbean, but perfectly snorkelable in good conditions.
Marine Life You'll See
Fish: Snapper (pargo), grouper (mero), barracuda, sergeant major, blue tang, parrotfish, queen angelfish. Invertebrates: sea urchins, starfish, lobster (in season), hermit crabs. Coral: brain coral, star coral, sea fans, barrel sponges. At the shipwreck: large moray eels in the hull, schools of silversides, the occasional nurse shark resting on the sand.
The Sisal Shipwreck
The highlight of Sisal snorkeling. A colonial vessel (17th-18th century) rests at 6-12 meters. At snorkel depth, you can observe the upper structure of the hull covered in coral and sponges. The bow is the most photogenic section. Visibility at the wreck: 6-10 meters. Not Cozumel — but genuinely impressive for what it is.
How It Compares to Caribbean Snorkel
Caribbean (Cozumel, Tulum): better visibility, more colorful reef, warmer feel. Sisal: larger fish, intact colonial wreck, zero other boats, authentic Gulf ecosystem. Both are worth doing — different experiences entirely.
