Holbox in 2026: Still a Hidden Gem?
Holbox was a hidden gem in 2010-2015. Today it has 50+ hotels, golf cart traffic, boutique restaurants with international prices and 300+ daily arrivals in peak season. The whale shark season (June-September) brings crowds. The flamingo lagoon on the west end is still beautiful — but you share it with dozens of boats. Holbox is lovely; it's just no longer secret.
Sisal in 2026: Actually Hidden
Sisal has 3 small guesthouses, no golf carts, no boutique hotels and a fraction of Holbox's visitor numbers. The waterfront restaurants serve local fishermen alongside the occasional visitor. International tourists are rare enough to be noteworthy. If you genuinely want "off the beaten path" in 2026, Sisal delivers what Holbox promised in 2012.
