The Mangrove Ecosystem Around Sisal

Sisal's mangroves form part of a continuous coastal lagoon system stretching toward the Celestun Biosphere Reserve. The dominant species is red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), with its distinctive arching prop roots providing habitat for juvenile fish, crabs, mollusks and dozens of bird species. The channels range from 3 to 15 meters wide — narrow enough to feel immersed in the vegetation.

Wildlife You'll See

Birds: Great Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Anhinga, Belted Kingfisher, Mangrove Warbler. Reptiles: American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) resting on banks, Green Iguana in canopy. Marine: juvenile fish schools, hermit crabs, fiddler crabs. Mammals: occasional river otter sighting near freshwater inputs.

Routes and Duration

Short route (1.5 hours): inner channel loop, calm water, ideal for families and beginners. Long route (3 hours): outer lagoon + channel system, more wildlife exposure, some open-water crossing. Sunset route (2 hours): departs 2 hours before sunset, golden light on the mangroves, roosting birds returning at dusk.
